Akron began as a small railroad camp about halfway between McCook, Nebraska, and Denver. The settlement was platted in 1882, and the town’s name traces to Akron, Ohio—the hometown of a railroad engineer’s wife. When Washington County was created in 1887, Akron became its county seat, a role it still holds today.
The railroad was central to Akron’s early identity. Colorado tourism history describes Akron as once the only established town along this stretch of the Burlington Northern line and an important place for railway workers. Over time, the surrounding prairie also made agriculture a defining part of the community.
From Homesteads to Dryland Agriculture
Akron’s story is closely tied to the farms and ranches of Washington County. Historic homesteads around Akron raised wheat, barley, corn, cattle, hogs, chickens and horses. The region became especially associated with dryland farming—agriculture adapted to the Eastern Plains’ limited rainfall.
In 1907, a federal dryland agricultural experiment station was established near Akron. Research conducted in the area helped develop and test crops and agricultural practices suited to the High Plains, strengthening Akron’s long relationship with agricultural research.
