A Brief History of Carbondale
Carbondale became a transportation and trading hub when the railroads reached the Roaring Fork Valley in 1887. Incorporated in 1888, the town took its name from Carbondale, Pennsylvania, the former home of some settlers. Its early economy connected ranching, agriculture and mining, although the silver crash of 1893 slowed its growth.
