Collbran developed as a ranching community and stage stop in the Plateau Valley. Its name recognized a Colorado Midland Railroad official, reflecting local hopes that a rail connection would reach the town. Historic commercial buildings and the early Congregational church recall a community shaped by ranching, trade and ambitions for better transportation.
