A Brief History of Crested Butte
Crested Butte incorporated in 1880 and initially supplied nearby mining camps. Coal mining and coke production soon became central to its economy, aided by the arrival of the railroad in 1881. The town's preservation program recognizes both that industrial heritage and the changes that followed as the community developed beyond its mining era.
