A Brief History of Dove Creek
Dove Creek’s history is rooted in the farming communities of southwestern Colorado. The P.R. Butt & Sons Building, constructed in 1914, survives from the settlement’s early commercial years. Nearby, Leslie V. Allen filed a 160-acre homestead in 1915 and sought another 80 acres three years later. These documented places connect the community to the families who established farms and services on the Great Sage Plain. The wider area has a much longer Indigenous history, represented by the eleventh- and thirteenth-century villages of the Brewer Archaeological District.
