Eads, Colorado

A town and county seat serving the farming and ranching communities of Kiowa County.

A Brief History of Eads

Eads took shape in 1887 after earlier townsite names, Dayton and New Dayton, and a change of location. Its name honors engineer James Buchanan Eads, known for the Mississippi River bridge at St. Louis. The community became a commercial and social center for Kiowa County’s farming and ranching families. Buildings along Maine Street reflect that role: the Slater and Whitelaw buildings date from the early twentieth century. After economic decline left downtown properties underused, local organizations and public partners pursued restoration and new uses for historic buildings, linking community services with preservation of the town’s commercial heritage.
