A Brief History of Edwards
Edwards grew from ranchland at the meeting of Lake Creek and the Eagle River. Eagle County’s community plan records Joseph Brett establishing a home there in 1879; his hunting and fishing camp became known as “The Frenchman’s.” Agriculture continued to shape the area well into the twentieth century. Development accelerated as nearby ski resorts expanded: Lake Creek Subdivision dates to 1970, Edwards Village Center to 1980 and Homestead to 1981. Riverwalk followed in 1993. These neighborhoods and commercial centers helped transform the ranching area into a valley community, which remains unincorporated under Eagle County government.
