A Brief History of Elizabeth

Elizabeth’s early economy grew from the Palmer Divide’s timber, farms and ranches. The Denver & New Orleans Railroad arrived in 1882, linking the settlement to wider markets and helping it become a center for agricultural services. The town incorporated on October 10, 1890. Its surviving 1882 railroad Section House and the 1890 Huber-Carlson Building preserve connections to those formative years. Falling cattle prices after 1921, the Depression and the removal of railroad tracks following the 1935 flood brought economic setbacks. Later transportation improvements encouraged growth, while local preservation efforts protected much of Old Town’s historic character.
