A Brief History of Fruita
William E. Pabor founded Fruita in 1884 with a vision of an irrigated agricultural community in the western Grand Valley. Having planted orchards nearby in 1883, he promoted settlement through the Fruita Town and Land Company. Bringing water to farmland was essential: Pabor helped develop the Grand River Ditch and later worked with the Independent Ranchmens’ Ditch. The town company’s financial difficulties led to reorganization as the Fruita Improvement Company in 1887. Fruita’s early story connects orchard planting, irrigation engineering and land development, foundations that shaped the community long before its modern recreation economy.
