A Brief History of Haswell
Haswell’s surviving buildings tell the story of commerce, farming and community life in Kiowa County. Acquilla Hollingsworth built the Holly Hotel, also known as the Haswell Hotel, in 1907; it welcomed travelers for roughly sixty years. Nearby homesteading brought families such as Conrad and Wilhelmina Spady, who arrived in 1914 and received a land patent in 1920. The town’s concrete jail dates to 1921 and ceased use in the 1940s. A Missouri Pacific depot from around 1950 recalls passenger and freight service, while the Women’s Booster Club building records local women’s efforts to establish a social center.
