A Brief History of Howard
Howard developed in western Fremont County from settlement beginning in 1871. Fertile land and cattle range attracted families, including William Stout’s, while John Howard gave the community its name. The railroad made Howard a shipping point for cattle, charcoal and ore from nearby Calcite. Its compact historic center included a post office, hotel, church and parsonage. The old Howard Church dates to 1898, and the community moved its school to a larger building in 1908. Local heritage tours preserve these connections between agriculture, transportation and everyday life along the Arkansas River valley.
