A Brief History of Ignacio
Ignacio’s history is closely connected to the Southern Ute people and the Los Pinos Agency. Land that became the town was once owned by Southern Ute tribal members. Roy Hall and Hans Aspaas Jr. purchased adjoining parcels between the agency and railroad station, establishing the new townsite. Hall filed a town plat on June 26, 1909; Hall and Aspaas filed additions in June 1910. Ignacio incorporated in 1913. The town developed as a service center for nearby ranches and reservation communities, with Southern Ute, Hispanic and Anglo residents contributing to its shared local history.
