A Brief History of Jamestown

Jamestown grew from a mining camp near the meeting of James and Little James creeks in the 1860s. Known earlier as Buckhorn and Camp Jimtown, it supported gold, silver and other mineral mining, with mills, houses and businesses replacing the first tents. The town incorporated in 1883. Community institutions endured as mining declined, including the Jamestown Mercantile, operating since 1906. Floods repeatedly reshaped the settlement: the Town Square followed the 1969 flood, and the destructive September 2013 flood prompted another major recovery effort. Town planning records preserve the history of rebuilding this small Boulder County municipality.
