A Brief History of Kersey
Kersey developed from the railroad settlement of Orr on the Union Pacific line through Weld County. Its depot connected surrounding farms and ranches with markets for sugar beets, potatoes, cattle and sheep. The Orr post office took the Kersey name in 1894, and residents voted to incorporate the town in 1908. By 1920, the community supported grain elevators, a bank, a newspaper, an ice factory and a two-story brick high school. Woodman’s Hall showed movies twice weekly. These institutions made Kersey a service and gathering center for an agricultural population extending well beyond the town itself.
