A Brief History of Kim
Kim’s community history dates to the establishment of its post office in 1917. Schools soon became important institutions for families scattered across eastern Las Animas County’s farms and ranches. A small high school opened in September 1920, and the district began a four-year program in 1924. Drought and dust storms later damaged the agricultural economy and school facilities. Between 1933 and 1941, New Deal relief programs supported construction of three locally quarried sandstone buildings: an elementary school, gymnasium and high school. The projects provided employment while improving education; the gymnasium also hosted dances, movies and community gatherings.
