A Brief History of Lake George
Lake George, an unincorporated Park County community, grew around George Washington Frost’s lake and ice business in the 1890s. Ice cut from the lake helped refrigerate produce carried by the Colorado Midland Railroad from the Western Slope toward the Pikes Peak region. Frost also hoped to establish a resort, but that venture struggled. A flood destroyed the dam in 1923, adding to the setbacks facing the settlement. In 1937, C. E. Stevenson rebuilt the dam and promoted lakeside lots. Automobile travel along Highway 24 encouraged a new generation of cabins, restaurants and roadside businesses serving visitors to the surrounding mountains.
