A Brief History of Louisville
Louisville’s coal-mining origins date to August 1877, when the Welch Mine opened. Local landowner Louis Nawatny laid out the settlement and gave it his own name. Incorporation followed on June 16, 1882. Mining brought workers and immigrant families whose homes, businesses and community life shaped the town beyond the mine workings. The Louisville Historical Museum began collecting local historical material in 1986, initially emphasizing the coal-mining years from 1878 to 1955. Its mining records, family artifacts and downtown photographs preserve the connections between the industry and the people who built this Boulder County community.
