A Brief History of Lyons
E.S. Lyon and his wife Adeline arrived in the area in 1880, and the sandstone deposits soon supported a growing quarry community. Lyons incorporated in 1891. Rail connections carried its stone to outside markets, while local sandstone also became a defining material in the town’s buildings. The 1881 schoolhouse now houses the Lyons Redstone Museum, preserving a link to the community’s early years. In September 2013, flooding devastated homes and infrastructure. Rebuilding housing and public amenities became another major chapter in the history of this town at the meeting of the North and South St. Vrain waterways.
