A Brief History of McCoy
McCoy’s early history reflects the importance of river crossings and stage travel in northwestern Colorado. Charles McCoy homesteaded in the area in 1885 and operated a roadhouse together with a ferry across the Grand River, now called the Colorado River. The settlement became an important stopping place on the route connecting the Wolcott railhead with communities in Routt County. Coaches carried travelers, mail and supplies through a landscape where river crossings and overnight stops shaped the journey. This transportation role forms a distinctive chapter in the history of today’s unincorporated Eagle County community.
