A Brief History of Meeker
Meeker grew from the Camp on the White River, where the U.S. Army constructed log buildings in 1880 while enforcing the forced removal of the Utes from their homeland. After the military abandoned the camp in 1883, settlers purchased its buildings and adapted them for homes, schools and businesses. The town incorporated in 1885, electing William H. Clark as its first mayor. Meeker became a commercial and banking center for surrounding ranches and farms. Surviving military buildings, including those used by the White River Museum, preserve evidence of the town’s origins.
