A Brief History of Mesa
Mesa’s post office was established in 1887, before the community’s original townsite was platted on October 24, 1900. That plat laid out two blocks containing 92 narrow lots along streets that still shape the community. A four-block addition followed on November 22, 1910. Another lasting local landmark arrived in 1936, when the Works Progress Administration built the Mesa Gymnasium and Auditorium. Its folding stage allowed the same floor to host performances, basketball and dances. The building’s varied uses reflect the importance of shared gathering places in this rural Mesa County community.
