A Brief History of Moffat
Moffat began as a railroad town in the San Luis Valley. The Denver & Rio Grande platted the townsite in 1890 and named it for David H. Moffat, a former president of the railroad. The Bank of Moffat opened in the town’s early years, and a two-story brick hotel dating to about 1906 reflected its growth. Moffat incorporated in 1911. A directory from that year recorded regular stage service to Saguache and Crestone and identified agriculture and livestock raising as local activities. The town’s population declined after the railroad withdrew.
