A Brief History of Monument
David McShane was among the early homesteaders to arrive in the Monument area in 1865 and later served as its first postmaster. Henry Limbach and his family helped lay out and develop the settlement, originally known as Henry’s Station. The arrival of the railroad in 1871 helped make it a trading center for the surrounding area. The community took its name from the rock formation to the west. When Monument incorporated in 1879, Limbach became its first mayor.
