Our Red Barn Ranch

On 40 acres of rolling Eastern Plains prairie just south of Calhan, a working ranch has grown into a place where visitors can slow down, meet the animals and experience the farm-and-ranch way of life firsthand.

A ranch built to be shared

Chris and Christiann Schade began raising alpacas in 2003. What started with alpacas grew into something much broader: a working ranch filled with animals, fiber arts, hands-on learning and opportunities for visitors to experience a way of life that is increasingly hard to find.

After moving from the Black Forest foothills to the prairie south of Calhan, they had room to expand both the ranch and the experiences they could share with others. Today the ranch welcomes individuals, families, schools and groups by appointment.

Come for the alpacas. Leave having experienced a little of Colorado ranch life.

More than an animal visit

Visitors can learn about alpacas and their fleece, meet horses, ponies and other ranch animals, and see how raw fleece becomes usable fiber. The ranch's Fiber Processing Studio expands that story with hands-on opportunities involving steps such as sorting, carding, felting and hand spinning.

Horseback riding and hands-on animal sessions offer more time with the animals, while the Fiber Farm Stand carries alpaca fiber goods and supplies. The ranch also offers RV camping and an on-site RV stay for visitors who want to make the experience part of an overnight Colorado trip.

Our Red Barn Ranch is only a short drive from Paint Mines Interpretive Park. Together they make an especially distinctive Calhan day: explore the colorful formations and trails at the Paint Mines, then trade the geological landscape for animals, fiber and ranch life on the prairie.
