A Brief History of Peyton
Peyton developed along the Rock Island Railroad as it extended toward Colorado Springs in the late 1880s. George W. Peyton’s land claim became the basis for the townsite, and a passenger train first passed through on Thanksgiving Day in 1888. Rail connections helped local farmers reach distant markets, while stores and services supported the surrounding countryside. Community institutions followed: land for Peyton Cemetery was deeded on April 18, 1893, with Joseph Zimmerman, Homer Van Horn and Burke Potter as its first trustees. Peyton remains an unincorporated community in El Paso County.
